Letter to the Public:
To Whom It May Concern:
My name is Eszter Nádasi, I am an EVS volunteer from Hungary, working for a LGBT support service in Dundalk, Ireland. As part of my work here I have a project called “Our Heroines”. I have been looking at same sex attracted women and the women who inspire them and I have decided to make a blog: www.ourheroines.wordpress.com to put the stories together for people to read about their experience in life, and discover where they find inspiration. The blog will give people the opportunity to enjoy and look through these stories. To compile this blog I am looking for same sex attracted women to write a piece for me about someone who has impacted on their lives and how they did that.
If you or anybody from your group interested in being part of this small piece of history making and discovering new things about women in our community, please contact me at ourheroines@gmail.com.
I would ask the same sex attracted women in your group to write a one page piece (no more than 250 words) telling me:
1. The name of the heroine (She can be, but doesn´t have to be famous!)
2. The reason why is she important
3. The first met or found out about her.
4. If the story could be accompanied by first name, age, nationality, sexual orientation, and a photo of the heroine that would be great.
I would like to ask you to share this request and my contact details with the same sex attracted women in your group to help me to explore who are our real heroines! If you can forward this letter to your mailing list that would be very big help for me.
The background of the project:
This idea steamed from a local exhibition for International Women´s Day 2012, I asked our staff members, ex-volunteers and service users about their heroines. We had a great response and we learned so much from the stories about popular and historical icons, and local women. These stories enriched everybody culturally and emotionally. I believe sometimes it is good to stop for a while and think about our life, what motivates us, and the people and things that give us power and strength. This project focuses on positivity in people’s life, because it is about support and positive, inspiring emotions. I would like to give a voice and opportunity to same sex attracted women to publicly acknowledge the people who have inspired them. It is also an opportunity to explore inspirational women who are not in the focus of the media, and to get an insight into the lives of women we have never met. In this way the blog will give us a chance to have a cultural experience, and an exchange of knowledge. In this project everybody’s opinion and experience is equally important. I feel the internationality of the project can enhance our sense of togetherness as a community and as Europeans.
