LGBT Diversity - Official Launch

New national programme addressing the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people to be launched

A new programme addressing the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people– LGBT Diversity – will be launched by Mr. Pat Carey, T.D., Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, at 10am on Tuesday, July 20th in the Royal Hibernian Academy, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2.

The LGBT Diversity programme is a coordinated response, by local and national organisations, to further develop understanding within Irish society of gender identity and sexual orientation. Its objectives are to develop a support network for LGBT people in rural areas, build the capacity of LGBT organisations and strengthen the Sector nationally.

The media launch will detail:

How the Programme intends to respond to shortcomings in services and supports.

The need for local and national organisations to further develop understanding within Irish society of gender identity and sexual orientation.

The types of activities and research the Programme is currently engaged in, such as research on LGBT parenthood.

The LGBT Diversity programme is a coordinated response, by local and national organisations, to develop the capacity of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) sector. The Programme will facilitate organisations and activists to collectively mobilise and engage with the community and wider society in order to advocate strategically and effectively on gender identity and sexual orientation issues. The ultimate aim of the Programme is to promote an Ireland that celebrates diversity, where LGBT people are an integral part of society - at all levels - and are afforded all the rights and responsibilities enjoyed by Irish citizens.
